Church Council and Elected Lay Leadership
The Church Council is charged with overseeing the strategic direction of the church, as well as approving the annual budget, elected leaders and clergy salaries.
The Church Council is comprised of 11 offices, 7 ministry teams, and 5 administrative committees of laity, in addition to the staff liaison for each ministry or administrative area. All members of these offices, teams and committees are members of the Church Council.
Terms and Election
BUMC follows the direction specified by the Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church in its election and structure of Church Council.
The church’s nominating process for elected positions begins in July. The Committee on Lay Leadership seeks input from current team and committee members, staff persons, and other congregational leaders. In addition, any interested church member is encouraged to submit a self-referral. Interested persons are encouraged to participate in a personal discernment process prior to submitting his/her name to the Committee on Lay Leadership for consideration. The committee then undergoes a careful discernment process to prepare the nomination slate below for consideration by Church Conference. The committee’s aim is to match persons with open positions according to the following standards:
- Full member of BUMC
- Actively fulfilling member expectations through their prayers, presence, gifts and service
- Prior involvement and/or leadership within church ministries
- Alignment with the church’s mission statement
- Ability to bring balance and/or diversity to the committee
- Appropriate talents or skills, often including subject matter expertise
- Ability to attend meetings and fulfill requirements
- In order to secure experience and stability, the teams and committee members are divided into three classes, one of which is elected each year for a three-year term.
- On the slate below, chairpersons are designated with a single asterisk.
