A Mentor’s Legacy

September 20, 2017

DAILY READING

Psalm 77

2 Kings 2:1-18

Mark 11:20-25

This week’s sermon text: Romans 7:13-25

FIELD NOTES

This story in 2 Kings depicts Elisha sticking close to his mentor Elijah throughout a long journey so that he may witness Elijah’s being taken up to heaven. At the end of the journey, the mentor asks his student, “Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you.” Elisha responds, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.” Elisha’s not asking to be more powerful than Elijah, but rather requests the same share as the inheritance of a first-born son from his father. He’s learned all he can. It’s time for Elisha to become Elijah’s successor. Because of Elisha’s faithfulness in remaining by Elijah’s side until his own time had come, his request is granted.

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • Think of the mentors or influences in your life that you’d like to learn from. How can you stick close by them to witness God’s work in their lives?
  • What kind of legacy are you leaving for the next generation? Is God’s work evident in your life for witnesses to proclaim?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • Talk about individuals who demonstrate God’s love. How can we be more like them?

Prayer Guide

Holy Creator, you have made us in your image, and we see that very image reflected in those whom you set in our path. Enable us to seek out mentors who teach us your ways. Enable us to become mentors to others, demonstrating your love through our actions and words. We are so thankful that you would love us enough to teach us how to love each other. Amen.
