And the Truth Will Set You Free

John 8:1-3; 21-38

FIELD NOTES

But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.  Early in the morning He came back into the temple [court], and all the people were coming to Him. He sat down and began teaching them.

Then Jesus turned to the Jews who had claimed to believe in him. “If you stick with this, living out what I tell you, you are my disciples for sure. Then you will experience for yourselves the truth, and the truth will free you.”

Jesus’ truth is a spiritual truth that offers freedom from the ‘wages of sin’… freedom to live in right relationship with God.  In his sermon on August 12th Davis made an interesting statement: “If a person has a ‘WHY’, they can live with almost any ‘HOW’.”  To my mind, this suggests that freedom in Jesus means being purpose-filled in all circumstances. Sometimes we need to move past our own blind spots; addictions; and fears … Christ is present to help us see and deal with our ‘little truths’.

If I can understand Jesus as the son of the Father; if I can follow the example of his life; then I am ‘freed’ up [unfettered] to enter discipleship.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, we would like to imagine that we were ‘the ones who understood’ your message from the very beginning.  We also know that really no one did. It took your extraordinary act of self-sacrifice to open our human eyes.  Now on ‘clear’ days, we can see you.  Hallelujah! Amen!
