Our discipleship is most active and vibrant when we ask: “Who would God invite me to be in this particular set of circumstances? What is the very best I can do in his name, right now?”
Luke answers those questions beautifully in researching and writing out the story of Jesus for ‘Theophilus, so [he] can know beyond the shadow of a doubt the reliability of what you were taught.’ In doing so he shares what he knows to be true about God’s love and faithfulness. There are many ways in which truth can be shared.
Two old sisters visited St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The elder sister had been a student of theology and religion. The younger one wanted to show her sister the magnificence of the basilica. On a pillar near the entrance sat two marble cherubs supporting a basin filled with Holy Water. As the sisters watched, several people touched the water and made the sign of the cross. The older sister felt drawn to the water. She slid the fingers of her right hand gently into the basin, and with the cool holy water made the sign of the cross on her forehead and lips. Then she drew her younger sister to the basin and said: “I want to give you a blessing.” As she marked her sister’s forehead with the cross, tears streamed down their faces. In the midst of a crowd on a Saturday morning in a Roman sanctuary thousands of miles from home, two old sisters shared a moment in which they touched the heartbeat of God.
