DAILY READING

Acts 20:1-16
This weekend’s readings: John 17:20-26

FIELD NOTES

In today’s story, Paul is preaching for so long and so late into the night that a young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in the window, falls asleep and falls out the window, falling to the ground three stories below! Miraculously, he survives. The name “Eutychus” literally means “lucky.”

I’m certain Paul’s words that night were Spirit-filled and contained a multitude of truths for all believers. But haven’t we all found ourselves drifting to sleep, or allowing our mind to wander, or just not as present as we need to be in the face of God’s word? Even Jesus’ closest friends could not stay awake through the night in Gethsemane. Thankfully, for Eutychus and for us, we get other chances. Let us not squander them. Wake up!

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • Are there areas in your life that need a wake-up call?
  • How can the spiritual disciplines help you address them?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • It’s hard to pay attention sometimes! Discuss with your family the best ways to pay attention to God.

PRAYER
God, we praise you for continually speaking to us, even when we fall asleep or ignore you. Keep speaking God! Open our ears to hear, and wake us from our slumber!
