Servanthood

November 14, 2017

DAILY READING

Mark 10:42-45

This week’s sermon text: Romans 15:14-29

FIELD NOTES
We want to be great, right? We seek approval, applause, power, and position. These things are what our culture often values, and so they become the things that we chase after, that we pursue single-mindedly.

James and John – a few verses earlier in chapter 10 – ask Jesus to appoint them to the positions of power immediately behind Jesus. They want to be the greatest.

Jesus, however, tells them they do not know what they are asking, and he gets frustrated with them. So Jesus calls together all the disciples and tells them not to be like others who lord power over one another. Instead, followers of Christ are called to be servants. Disciples should pursue Jesus, and Jesus will always be found serving the least of these. We, too, are called to be intentional with our walk with Jesus and to follow in his footsteps of servanthood.

QUESTIONS FOR THE FIELD

  • Have you ever held a position of power or influence? Were you able to use that position to serve others?
  • Who or what are you seeking? Are you trying to be the greatest at something? Do you seek Jesus with the same passion that you do other things?

FAMILY FIELD TALK

  • How can you be a servant this week?

PRAYER GUIDE
Servant God, thank you for the call to service. Show me where you are already at work in the world and help me to join you in service to the least of these. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
