This weekend’s reading: Luke 24:1-12

FIELD NOTES
On Tuesday of Holy Week, we begin to look at the events leading up to the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus. Any study of the four gospels will show the significant and abundant ministry that Jesus had on Earth, showing us both his humanity and his divinity. The stories we have of Jesus show us that he was both fully God and fully man, and this juxtaposition sets the stage for what Jesus had to wrestle with and endure in the days before his death.

In the gospel of John, Jesus alludes to his own death and resurrection several times. Those who followed Jesus either didn’t understand what he was talking about, or completely missed his references altogether. It is only now on the other side of the cross that we are able to see how Jesus not only predicts his own death (v.23) but struggles with it (v.27).

Jesus’ troubled soul did not prevent him from recognizing that it was the exact thing that he struggled with that he was put on earth to do. Jesus seeks to glorify his Father in all things, and His example of humility and surrender can help us face our darkest hours. The light of Jesus is with us for a little while longer (v.35), and we are called to not only hold this light in our hearts as we continue to move through Holy Week but to acknowledge that the darkness is coming. But we know that the darkness shall not overcome the light.

  • When you face struggles, is it easy to surrender them to God? Why or why not?
  • What do you need to surrender to God today? How can God receive glory through your struggles?
