The Questions Jesus Asks Us

July 21, 2018

DAILY READING

Psalm 23
Luke 18:35-43
This weekend’s reading: Matthew 14:22-32

FIELD NOTES

In today’s story, a blind man asks Jesus for help. “Son of David, have mercy on me,” he shouts as Jesus makes his way past him, surrounded by a noisy crowd. When Jesus hears this one, lone voice above the din, he asks that the man be brought to him and then he asks, “What do you want me to do for you?” I think this is an interesting question. Doesn’t it seem pretty obvious what the blind man would want from Jesus? Yet Jesus gives the man the courtesy and respect to ask him what he wants.

You may be struggling right now with a problem in your life; you may have financial or relational difficulties. You may be battling health problems or loneliness. You may have cried out to Jesus, too, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Did you hear Jesus reply? He asks YOU a question, “What do you want me to do for you?”  He courteously and respectfully awaits your answer. Don’t be shy. You can be direct just like the blind man was: “Lord, let me see again.”
