Those Who Serve Us

November 30, 2018

DAILY READING

1 Thessalonians 5:12-22
This weekend’s reading: Jeremiah 33:14-16

FIELD NOTES

So I might be slightly ad-libbing on this passage, but this beautiful benediction to the Thessalonians has reminded me of the Christmas season of 2018.  Here’s why.  Paul writes, “But we appeal to you, brothers and sisters, to respect those who labor among you.”  Now in it, he is speaking about Christians and early Church leaders, but when I saw the phrase “those who labor among you” I thought of all of the retail workers, restaurant servers and cooks, valet parkers, cleaners, mailmen and women and folks who have to work really hard to serve others this Christmas season.  I think about how these folks often get the short end of the stick dealing with impatient and frustrated customers.  So this Christmas season, be mindful of how hard those who work in the retail and restaurant business are working.  They want you to be happy!  Take the time to share a smile or thank you for their work and in this way, share the true meaning of the season with them.

QUESTIONS FROM THE FIELD

  • How can you embody Christ in the world today?
  • How can you show thanks for the people who are working extra hard to make your Christmas special this year?

PRAYER

God, help us to remember all of those who have to work harder in order for me to rest.  May they be blessed abundantly for their labors and may I be a source of that blessing.  Remind me to share your love as I am out and about this holiday season.
